MICHIGAN DEMOCRATIC JEWISH CAUCUS CHAIR RESPONDS TO OUTBREAK OF VIOLENCE IN ISRAEL AND GAZA

LANSING, Mich. — "I woke up to news today that a 23 year old young man from Ashkelon died of his wounds after a mortar attack on a factory. I am struck by how this young man had his entire life ahead of him, like me, but his life was cut short by the murderous acts of jihadist terrorists in Gaza. As ever, these attacks prove Hamas and Islamic Jihad do not seek peace with the State of Israel. They seek nothing less than its complete destruction.

"As Jews, we understand suffering - we recognize the struggle for self-determination of the Palestinian people. But we will never accept or excuse terrorism – violence against innocent civilians – as a means of achieving it. We call now for an immediate end to the current mortar and shell attacks from Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and allied groups. We call on the Israeli government to take steps to engage with the Palestinian Authority for the resumption of negotiations for a permanent end to the conflict, including the resolution of all final status issues. As always, we pray for peace and stand with Israel during this time of insecurity.”
