Michigan Jewish Democrats Decry Violence by White Supremacist “Proud Boys” in Kalamazoo

White supremacist violence in Kalamazoo clarifies stakes of presidential election, prospect of Trump re-election should “strike fear” in hearts of Jewish voters, says MDJC chair Noah Arbit

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The Michigan Democratic Jewish Caucus is appalled by the violence on display this afternoon in downtown Kalamazoo, as far-right extremist members of the “Proud Boy” white supremacist group gathered and attacked peaceful protesters. The “Proud Boys” are not only deeply racist, misogynistic and Islamophobic, but also deeply antisemitic. When white supremacists gather in an American city carrying Trump flags and shouting racist slogans, then proceed to physically attack protesters, it is an act of political violence that threatens us all.

“I am disturbed by the violence perpetrated by extremist white nationalists in my hometown today,” said MDJC Southwest Regional Chair Troy Zukowski. “Kalamazoo is a diverse, welcoming community, and we will not be cowed by those who want to come to our home and perpetrate violence - least of all in the name of the President of the United States. As Jews, we must stand with marginalized communities against this ugly hatred, and our Jewish community in Kalamazoo will continue to do just that.”

Noah Arbit, founder and chair of the Michigan Democratic Jewish Caucus added, “Today’s shocking and disturbing violence in Kalamazoo should focus the minds of Michigan voters on the stakes of the upcoming presidential election. The prospect of re-electing Donald Trump, whose hate-filled rhetoric provides succor to Jew-haters, racists, misogynists, and Islamophobes across the country, including the “Proud Boys” who showed up today in Kalamazoo, should strike fear into the heart of every Jewish voter - in Michigan and across the country. To anyone who supports Donald Trump, I ask: “if the Nazis support this man, how can you?”
